The Petaluma Valley Petanque Club was conceived in 2006 by Ed Porto and founded by him, Dave Webster and Dave Brooks in 2007. After a two-year process that included proposals to the City of Petaluma and negotiations with neighborhood groups, and with a generous financial contribution from Dave Brooks, the petanque courts were installed at Oak Hill Park in the spring of 2009.

Numerous club members and supporters contributed to the club's formation. Fund raisers and 'work parties' were held over the next few years in order to develop the playing facility into an attractive recreational setting. The final touch was added in 2013 — a unique metal bench that was fabricated and donated by Aurelio's Old World Iron Works of Petaluma.

The club now has nearly 40 members and is affiliated with the Federation of Petanque, USA. FPUSA is part of the international petanque federation (FIPJP) and has over 2,000 members nationwide.
